Competition Rules - Application Process

1.  The competition is open to cellists of all nationalities, ages 17 to 29 (by Jan 6, 2019).  There is NO APPLICATION FEE.
The winner will receive 2,000 US Dollars and be the featured cellist in the Water Island Music Festival.

2. The competition will take place in two rounds.  

3. The first round will consist of a video recording of a freely chosen 3-5 minute piece from the standard cello repertoire, for either solo cello, cello and piano, or cello and orchestra. The video should be uploaded to youtube, vimeo, or equivalent, and the link should then be emailed to the competition by Nov 1, 2018.

4.  Four finalists will be chosen by Nov 15, 2018 to proceed to the final round.

5.  The final round will take place in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Jan 6, 2019 at 7:30PM.

6.  All four finalists will get to play at Carnegie Hall in front of presenters from the APAP National Conference.

7.  The piece to be performed in the final round will be the 4-movement Sonata No. 2 for Cello and Piano by Julian Gargiulo (split up amongst the 4 finalists, one movement each). The movements will be assigned randomly when the four finalists are chosen.

8.  The winner of the final round will be chosen by the audience immediately after all four finalists have performed
​on Jan 6, 2019.

9.  The winner will be the featured cellist during the 14th Water Island Music Festival (http://water-island-music.com), taking place from Jan 18-20, 2019.  Airfare, lodging, and meals will be provided.  Performing in the Water Island Music Festival is compulsory, and not being able to perform will mean forfeiting the prize.
