7th Getting to Carnegie 2021 - Violin Edition
Competition Rules
1. The competition is open to all violinists of all nationalities, ages 18 to 29 (by Jan 12, 2021). There is no application fee. The winner will receive 2,500 US Dollars, will be the featured violinist at Carnegie Recital Hall in the 2022 Getting to Carnegie Competition, and will be the featured violinist during the 17th Water Island Music Festival, in St. Thomas, USVI.
2. The competition will take place in two rounds.
3. The first round will consist of a video recording of a freely chosen 3-5 minute work (or segment from that work) from the standard violin repertoire, for either solo violin, violin and piano, or violin and orchestra. The video should be uploaded to youtube, vimeo, or equivalent, and the link should then be emailed to the competition by Dec 10, 2020.
4. Four finalists (and four alternates) will be chosen by Dec 15, 2020 to proceed to the Final Round.
5. The piece to be performed in the Final Round will be the Sonata No. 4 for Violin and Piano by Julian Gargiulo (split up amongst the 4 finalists, one movement each). The movements will be assigned randomly when the four finalists are chosen. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic instead of traveling to NY to rehearse and perform the Sonata “live”, each finalist will receive a recording of the piano part of their movement, and will record their violin part separately from home. The piano and violin parts will then be edited together.
6. Unlike previous years, due to Covid-19, the Final Round will not be held at Carnegie Hall but will be streamed on the Violin Channel’s Facebook page for their audience of over 350,000 members.
7. Voting will also be different this year. Fifty percent of the vote will come from the audience watching the live stream on the Violin Channel’s Facebook page (and available 48hrs afterwards) For someone to vote, all they will need is a valid email address. The other fifty percent of the vote will come from a jury of professional musicians.
8. The winner will receive a cash prize of 2,500 US Dollars, be the featured violinist at Carnegie Recital Hall in the following Getting to Carnegie Competition to be held in January 2022, and will be the featured violinist during the 17th Water Island Music Festival, taking place in January 2022 on Water Island, USVI. Airfare, lodging, and meals will be provided (for the Water Island Music Festival). *Note: Performing in the Water Island Music Festival is compulsory, and not being able to perform will mean forfeiting the prize.
